It is estimated that one in five people who require life, travel or financial products do not fit the “standard” health profile. When a person has medical impairments, the factory-style approach which works so well on healthy lives, does not deliver. Many large companies are simply not set up to provide a tailored service for impaired lives.

On-line systems can be even stricter in their underwriting. When the screen says “refer to underwritings” you know things are going to get tough. Many large companies are simply not geared up to provide a tailored service for “impaired lives”. Underwritings departments may have been scaled back, outsourced or even based outside the UK and many offices focus on their own costs and efficiency needs, rather than the need of the client.

Only a small number of insurers address the needs of people with “impaired lives” and yet people with medical problems are more aware of the value of insurance and also more anxious as to whether they can obtain it.

Over the past couple of decades with all kinds of insurances (including household and motor as well as financial and travel) insurers have concentrated an “standard” risks. They perceive that they can underwrite more easily, thus keeping costs low and profits higher.
